Crystal Castles 13.6 @ The Circus, Helsinki

Jussumnotesboutmondaysgig.

It was intense. Intense in a way I've never seen before. Okay, I usually go to about two or three gigs per year so I can't say I've witnessed too many concerts. But all the ones I've been to have been great, I have always had a blast, even at the ones where the music wasn't really up to par (there's more to concerts than just music).

This was different though. You could tell by the way it began. The drums started thumping ominously and before you knew it, the bass kicked in with enough oomph to make your intestines resonate. When the first notes of the night make you feel like there's something inside you that shouldn't be there, you know you're in for a ride. Kinda like being a passenger in a plane about to fly through a heavy storm. Suck it up and take it all in. You payed for it goddammit.

And the crowd grew more and more restless as Alice Glass crawled on the stage. Literally, crawled, wearing a hoodie and a Jurassic Park t-shirt (not the only items of clothing she had on, mind). "Fainting Spells" was just a wall of noise. The crowd loved it, they could've just played random notes with heavy distortion and shitloads of bass and the audience would've gone crazy anyway. The tension which had been building up during the two-hour wait had become almost unbearable, kids leaning on the railing in the front row, a packed house slowly forming a mass of people behind them, all waiting for the first glimpse of the already iconic pair of Ethan Kath and Alice Glass. Every slight movement in the dim-lit stage generated loud cheers. Shit, even the fucking drum technician was a star that night!

Crystal Castles managed to whip up the crowd into such a frenzy you couldn't at the wildest parts tell the difference between party atmosphere and pure panic, and Alice Glass, with her utterly iconic, reckless presence was just fuel for the fire. The people wanted to take a part of her for souvenir, reaching for her in total despair like she could cure cancer.

The combination of the heat, the pummeling sound, the crazed crowd, and the lights loud enough to kill all the epileptics in the house was enough to make one want to shout out "there are children here!".

However, as intense as the gig was, it would've probably benefited from a couple of  mellower moments. Apart from a few quieter intros, the whole set was a blur of... well, all the things I mentioned.

Come to think of it, maybe their unabated style was the thing that pushed the whole thing one notch further. Over the cliff. The view's far better from the air, right?
