Jesus Christ died on June 28, 1993. He walked through Manhattan naked, covered in his own feces and blood, to the apartment of John Handley Hurt, and died there after overdosing on heroin.
GG Allin, probably the single most infamous person in rock history, was actually born Jesus Christ Allin. His father was a religious fanatic who told his wife that Jesus had visited him and told him that his newborn son would be a great, powerful man in the vein of Messiah.
Well, his son would become a man known for eating his own excrement, rolling around in broken glass, assaulting people at random and taking every kind of drug he was offered.
And yeah, he made some music too in the process.
Allin considered himself "the last true rock'n'roller", a messianic outlaw hell-bent on bringing danger and rebellion back to rock'n'roll.
He had very few possessions, he lived his life mainly on the road and stayed with his disciples, troubled kids who had run way from home, living on prescription drugs and stolen food. To them, Allin was so far out he was actually close. A character who had abandoned society and lived his life the way he wanted, following only his impulses and primal needs.
In their eyes, Allin lived a dream. However, to the general public Allin's dream was a nightmare.
He ended up in jail numerous times because of his volatile behaviour. Due to being locked up on almost every Halloween during his last years, he wasn't able to fulfil his promise of committing suicide on stage on that specific day.
I haven't exactly made up my mind on whether I despise or actually like the guy. But I've got to say that underneath the schizophrenic, misanthropic nature of his must be an allright fellow.
I came to the conclusion after seeing Hated, a documentary about his career, his life and his last moments on this earth. Well, what actually altered my opinion was the bit in the movie where Allin's sitting around playing "Carmelita" by Warren Zevon, which happens to be one of my favourite songs ever.
I love that scene. A tramp singing with a prostitute in someone's bathroom. With a syringe attached to the neck of his old, broken, untuned acoustic guitar. Iconic.
And how can a man who likes Warren Zevon be nothing less than a saint?
